Next Door-New Moon

On the coming Thursday the 25th, an alignment will occur of Earth with its two luminaries, which will stand on the same sidereal position at 4° Gemini. It will be the New Moon, which flags the beginning of a new cycle, when the Sun barely commences traversing the third of the twelve sectors into which the Western astrological tradition has divided the spherical image in order to represents the celestial vault.

A Sun-Moon conjunction, such as it happens every 29 days (4 weeks), will show up on the coming Thursday, May the 25th. Both luminaries will now come together, starting in the first decan of Gemini —a zodiacal zone that governs the third and final phase of the spring season in the northern hemisphere. The group of stars receiving the solar visit at this time of the year perpetuates the memory of the mythological characters of Castor and Pollux, twin sons of Zeus, the mightiest of the gods, sovereign of the Olympus.

The passing of the Sun by Gemini is associated with the conditions of duality, instability, volubility, versatility, change and transition, with which people usually relate this time of the year, along with the idea of duplicity, typical of the twins’ notion. Gemini’s regency is attributed to Mercury, which is also identified with an adaptable and communicative mental energy akin to this sign.

Two particular reasons grant the forthcoming Gemini-New Moon a dimension superior to the one it possesses during the rest of the months of the year: on that same day, with as little as a 5 hour difference, the Perigee —the monthly passage of the Moon by the point closest to Earth— comes to occur. And it is not a common perigee, but the one, in the whole year, taking place at the shortest distance from Earth.

By reason of the ellipsis that it draws around the Earth, the Moon passes each month through a point closest to, and a point most distant from, the planet. These points are, respectively, the Perigee and the Apogee. They are some 31,000 miles away from each other, and the magnitude of the lunar influence is therefore quite different on each case.

The distances between the planet and its satellite, on perigee or apogee, also vary each month. And there is only one day in the year when the greatest lunar proximity occurs, as there is also only one day for the maximum distance. On the night of this Thursday the 25th, the closest yearly approximation of our satellite will take place, coinciding this time with the New Moon; for which reason, the energetic flow of attraction of Moon and Sun regarding Earth will be superlative this time.

The Sun-Moon fusion of Thursday the 25th will be accompanied with a singular planetary interrelation: Venus —the symbol of affectivity and economy— will stand, in Aries, at  90 ° from Pluto (the sidereal body of depths and drastic resolutions, of radical changes and transmutation), transiting by Capricorn. This quartile between the two planets might represent an intimate shudder from sensitivity, or the manifestation of disturbance in the rhythm of financial management.

Two other sidereal bodies, Mars and Saturn, will be aligning these days from the Gemini / Sagittarius axis. These are antagonistic energies located opposite to each other.  Mars suggests the impulsive and irrational strength —bold and violent— that emerges against the structured power of Saturn, which personifies control, authority and established order. We are faced with the configuration of an extremely conflictive planetary energy, which tends to manifest itself in high levels of provocation and rebellion, which will be repelled through actions of force, so as to subdue and dominate.

The surplus cosmic energy of these days will reach its ebullition and effervescence climax with the New Moon of Gemini, and its maximum annual perigee, on Thursday, the 25th of May. On this date, powerful astral physical forces converge on the surface of Earth; both because of the position that our two main astral bodies integrate, as well as because of the profoundly transforming symbolic charge they contain.

The Geminian character that now prevails through the passing of Sun, Moon and Mars by this zodiacal sign, along with the quaternary quality of the date on which the extraordinary New Moon of this month occurs, and the zodiacal degree in which the two luminaries will come together, grant this new lunar cycle a special dimension: approaching us, times are coming of  adaptation to a different reality that  demands the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual connection of humans, if they are to face successfully the demanding challenges of the present era.
