Let’s talk about the Emmy

DISCLAIMER: For me, Award Season begins at the Emmy’s, and then fall comes and all the “I can’t believe this movie, it’s going to be so great” movies are released, and speculation starts early on about who will be this year’s BIG movies. After all the fall festivals come the Golden Globes (an early birthday present), the SAG Awards, and finally, the Oscars.

I will be writing about all these shows for ViceVersa, so you better tune in!

The first thing I noticed when the date was announced was that the Emmy’s were now on a Monday, and I have no idea why the Emmy’s were on a Monday. I’m glad Seth Meyers agreed with me.

Award show hosts do come under a lot of scrutiny for their job but I will say this: Seth Meyers did awesomely. I liked his opening monologue, I liked his introductions, and I LOVED the True Detective segment with Amy Poehler (Weekend Update flashback, we all cried). For a first time host, he gets an A.

My favorite things about the Emmy’s were:

  • EVERYTHING that had Julia Louis Dreyfus and Bryan Cranston in it. These two have made my day, my week and possibly my life
  • Amy Poehler as Beyoncé and Amy Pueblo.  I want to be Amy Poehler when I grow up
  • The best advice Louis C.K. gave to one of her young actresses as a director was how to hold a joint properly
  • Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson dressed for their Night Out at the Roxbury
  • The fact that absolutely no one knew how to act around Matthew McConaughey and Julia Roberts
  • Andy Samberg as Joffrey
  • Weird Al’s segment
  • The LOVE that Aaron Paul has for his wife
  • Jon Hamm’s beard #Lumberjack

I have to dedicate some space to point out that my absolutely favorite thing about the Emmy’s was Billy Crystal’s tribute to Robin Williams. Anybody who’s remotely perceptive knows how personal I’ve taken his death. I’ve seen all the tribute videos, read all the articles (and cried in some). After the In Memoriam segment ended, I was ready to fume over Twitter that they’d forgotten him. But of course they didn’t. Soon enough a giant photograph of Williams appeared on the screen and next to it was one of the greats, Billy Crystal. A genius would make the tribute for my genie. And he was perfect. I really do hope that someday I understand: “Robin Williams, what a concept.”

Now, things I didn’t like about the Emmy’s:

  • Kerry Washington’s hair
  • Lena Dunham’s dress (and will have nightmares with it until October)
  • Modern Family winning Best Comedy again
  • The Amazing Race winning Best Reality Television Program again
  • Julianna Marguilies winning Best Actress in a Drama Series instead of Robin Wright for her role as Claire f***ing Underwood on House of Cards
  • Gwen Stefani not knowing how to pronounce Colbert
  • And last but not least, Sofia Vergara spinning on a platform while the president of the Academy spoke.

Breaking Bad took all the gold it rightfully deserved, and I promise I will watch it in its entirety after I finish my thesis. I need to understand why Ozymandias is a game changer and will probably change my life. I have to say I will miss Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston’s bromance.

Here are some of my tweets during the event. I am a big fan of caps in award shows. You’ve been warned.
