Caupolican Ovalles

The President

THE PRESIDENT enjoys his life in his palace,
he eats more than all the nationals together,
and fattens less
for being elegant and traitorous.
His molars are in perfect shape;
however, an ulcer
eats the kind part of
the heart
and that’s why he smiles when he sleeps.
Since he’s elected by the will of all
the majoritarian owners of immense riches
he’s a ruling dog,
he’s a dog that obeys his owners,
he’s a dog that waddles his tail,
he’s a dog that kisses the boots
and gnaws the bones anyone throws at him
to frisk.
His belly and his thought
are what people call emergency toilet.
Through his mouth
run the foul waters
of all the cities.
With his hands he guts virginities

and
like an old whore
he’s weak
and proud of his charms.
He thinks he’s the youngest
and he is a perilous killer.
Nobody could say
which gesture of his shows he’s a loved man,
because they spit his sign
and tell him when he walks by:
“There goes the most charming shit”,
While
people pay the electric bill,
the phone bill,
the gas,
and the water bills,
like a newborn,
among cares and mattress springs,
the old slut sleeps.
Nothing wakes him up.
THE PRESIDENT enjoys his life in his palace.

Very sad, very sad

In arriving THE PRESIDENT says:
“Adulate me, for I am sad.
Look for that guitar player that calms my
nerves.
It’s just that I’m very sad.”
The Mandarin retires
to his inner chambers
saying:
Very sad,
very sad.
And he grabs his ear
and says:
Very sad,
very sad.
And he grabs his belly
and thinks
about the sadness.
He dries his forehead
with a handkerchief
and says:
“Everybody says it’s not true that I
love them.”

When he’s with his friend, The Yankee,
Inside of his great enjoyment,
his lips burst,
he shivers with excitement.
His eyesight blurs
and he feels desire for love,
very sad,
very sad.

If instead of sleeping

If instead of sleeping
he’d dance the tango
with his ministers
and his chiefs of love,
we could
hear
from night to night
his heels clacking
like an archduke
or a duchess.
We could laugh
just by watching him,
ridiculous as he is,
waiting for the applause
of all the frantic
gendarmerie.
Sure, we are tired
and wish for a bit of monstrous
fun,
like this one
of watching him
with the lyre around his neck
hanging,

like a roman
or a roman woman
blinded by brilliant, absurd beliefs.
If instead of promising
the discovery of the philosopher’s
stone
that will produce bread
and banks notes
he would work hard,
arrogant as he is,
at selling rotten potatoes
or rancid corn,
the Indians of this nation
would call him
Chief Pearl Eye.
If instead of crying
you’d die one of these days,
like an elegant sow with its fat
imported from the North,
we,
who are tired
of so many stupid confessions,
would make the stones dance
and the trees would bear manufactured fruits.
With your old and putrid bones,
rat food,
we will fill a single place of this earth

and we’ll call it
the Cursed Cave
and it will be forbidden to see it
and to come near it
for fear of awakening your hysterical
tenderness.
They call you
Joseph the Dreamer,
the one with the sacred cows,
the owner of the skinniest cows,
and
President of the “County Society of Sleep”.
Your friends call you
Barbiturate.
How much do you sleep, Mr. President?
If he worships the cow,
he sleeps!
If it’s the calf he worships,
he sleeps!
And if the General gives him his lunch,
he sleeps like a log
or has a sleep tantrum.
Mud Face,
Eye to see the Serpents and call
and call them,

Eye to keep company
and burn you
with the humble Kerosene,
Eye to be at my service
like a cheap
bellboy.
Are you sleeping, Mr. President?
I ask you as a handsome young man
unlike you, lord of the nap.
Mud Eye and Emergency Toilet.

Are you sleeping, Mr. President?

I, Hosts-Poet, Ahab’s fifth descendant
with known residence:
Roof of the Whale
from this city,
called jail
in the language of the sons of the Magma,
and loved by me,
raise the basket of my life
above the East End
and start to laugh
in the morning and at night
like a slum child.
I laugh in Sad-View
and its denizens,
all owners of great riches,
stun my thought
and surround my neck
with a thousand horrible legends,
and they take my hand
to show me the way
we must follow
after the battle,
in which

I, Hosts-Poet,
of twenty-five years of age
and an attorney-without-law,
will ride my red horse,
feared and elegant.
My horse with a secret name
to keep it free from hurries
or arrests,
for
in this city,
which I kiss with the lips
of a sole woman’s brother,
everything’s got to be kept
away from the worst dangers
and lurkings
from a kingdom of men and women
that respect nothing
and destroy everything
at the first strike of sight.
With my horse
I will ride crushing skulls
in my city
surrounded by white walls
very well guarded
and with its blood seal
that we will vanish.

In Sad-View
people know me
and my three
full brothers
with a bright future.
We all gather round
the poorest hut.
I’m an Informalist painter
and a poet published in newspapers
when the machines sleep.
I walk around in my city,
In my jail I walk around,
young fugitive father
always on the run,
not dreading
the wind
or the sky
nor rummaging through their desolate houses,
but I do walk around or march
asking
where is
the sleep animal
that procreates treasons
and crimes
without fear
of the year’s beautiful season,
because I want to meet it
face to face

I
with my hordes
and she
with her Yankees
tormented by an insatiable
love
for this land
or for this city,
in love
and lovers of the King of Sleep,
who came
from New York
with a birth certificate
from Cincinnati or Ohio,
which we pronounce Ojayo,
or
which amounts to the same,
a stone-faced monarch
with tragic seamstress’ hands
like an old whore,
weak
hysteric,
with gorgeous legs,
like the war car
that killed
Abraham,
a real bastard
and western ally,

owner of half the country,
like Caligula’s whores,
in times of the King of New York,
looking for amulets
and potions
to give
to all my brothers,
sons of blacks and half-breeds
like Me,
Hosts-Poet,
hard drinker
and early riser,
but one who thinks
with a single blow
to throw
the old pest
off his throne,
with a whale in my chest,
while she gives birth to her children
i feed them
out of my own hunger,
I think,
I think i must
fight
to know the truths
that seem hidden.
I, who paint with dirt,
spit, lime, and asbestos

when there are enough bolívares,
I also know how to work
with the pen of the most
dangerous ocean.
I don’t hang with employees
of flattery
and disaster,
I take care of helping
whomever I want,
required by
the only doctrine I have,
the only law.
I don’t put up with insults
from any ill-famed
epilogue of official
characters,
like the decimal metric system,
so useless
when everything is imported
and nothing produced,
and this is my economic law,
all of my knowledge of grand
ignorant,
for all I know is that
better days
will come
in which
I’ll have
the wisdom to frighten and bring to tears
more than one dog
ambushed
in this jail,
this country.
I,
born in 1936,
since I am
twenty-five,
ask
with no support from any
Constitution:
where’s the fly
that puts The President
to sleep
time and time again?
where is it fed?
And if it’s not in the “United States
for the Exploitation
of the Indians and Plebeians
of the South”,
let
the heroic
friends from the
Roof of the Whale,
denizens of Sad-View,
come to pull out my tongue
to fry it in front of
Me,
the mistaken man!
I, Hosts-Poet,
with a few bills in my pocket,
much heartedly,
I think I’m not wrong
and
I ask:
Are you sleeping?
Old man!
Old elected!
Old Magnificent Pontiff!
Are you sleeping?
young financier!
great banker!
do you sleep?
Tired of writing foolish things
for eleven years,
looking for
who knows what beautiful combinations
of phrases and words,
now I just want
to have an answer
to my questions,
in the distant term,
about the Grand Imbecile
or his Putative Sons
or Whores.
I, Ahab’s descendant
and citizen
who loves his city,
am allowed to ask,
I have the right
by the Constitution
of my acts and my faith
as a man of the sea,
I have the right
I say,
to ask
where is the monster
that causes
so much pain,
so much humiliation,
because I have the order
written on stone
to
finish him off
or to find refuge to
find the quickest
and long lasting
solution.

I, Hosts-Poet,
love my city.
I live with only one hope
and only one purpose
out of knowledge
maybe
out of bad faith
or out of ignorance
as I could protest
so much ambushed shit.
I want to know
why all you can do,
old bones,
is sleep?
Roof of the Whale
receiving the visit of the
Astronaut,
also from a known
address,
friend of Sad-View
and an important man
friend and poet.
I, Old Ahab, called
Hosts,
twenty-something years
old.

Protest
with my voice,
I Protest
with this pen
given to me
so that I would respect it
and make others respect it.
I am free of riches
and freedom,
but I have a whale on my chest
and a code
I respect and defend
of the Kings and the Queens,
Archdukes or Counts,
dancers and diners
from one and the same table.
“If instead of talking so much
they danced to
the joke of death
we’d live happily.”
However,
we’ll manage to take the enemy down
with their Ambassadors
and their perfect teeth
and their ailments
and their old prostitutes
weak,
widows of a cataclysm
that we will see.
I, Hosts-Poet,
ask:
Are you sleeping, sir?

El Presidente

EL PRESIDENTE vive gozando en su palacio;
come más que todos los nacionales juntos
y engorda menos
por ser elegante y traidor.
Sus muelas están en perfectas condiciones;
y
como una vieja puta
es débil
y orgulloso de sus coqueterías.
Se cree el más joven
y es un asesino de cuidado.
Nadie podría decir
cuál es su gesto de hombre amado,
porque todos escupen su signo
y le dicen cuando pasa:
«Ahí va la mierda más coqueta».
Cuando
se apaga la luz,
el teléfono,
el gas,
y el agua,
como un recién-nacido,
entre cuidados y muelles de colchones,
la vieja zorra duerme.
Nada le hace despertar.
EL PRESIDENTE vive gozando en su palacio.

Muy triste, Muy triste

Cuando llega EL PRESIDENTE dice:
«Aduladme, que estoy triste.
Buscad a ese guitarrista que me compone
los nervios.
Es que estoy muy triste».
El Mandarín se retira
a sus habitaciones interiores diciendo:
Muy triste,
muy triste.
Y se agarra la oreja
y dice:
Muy triste,
muy triste.
Y se agarra la barriga
y piensa
en la tristeza.
Se pasa el pañuelo
por la frente
y dice:
«Todos dicen que es mentira que los
quiero».

Cuando está con su amigo El Yanqui,
dentro de su gran gozo,
se le rebrotan los labios,
siente escalofríos de emoción.
Se le nubla la vista
y se siente con deseos de amor,
muy triste,
muy triste.

Si en vez de dormir

Si en vez de dormir
bailara tango
con sus ministros
y sus jefes de amor
nosotros podríamos
oír
de noche en noche
su taconeo
de archiduque
o duquesa.
Podríamos reír
sólo de verle,
ridículo como es,
esperar los aplausos
de toda la gendarmería
frenética.
Claro que uno está cansado
y quiere un poco de diversión
monstruosa,
como ésta
de verle
con la lira en el cuello
colgada,
como un romano
o como una romana
ciega de absurdas creencias geniales.
Si en vez de prometer
el descubrimiento de la piedra
filosofal
que ha de producir pan
y billetes de veinte
se dedicara,
por lo soberbio que es,
a vender patatas podridas
o maíz rancio,
los indios de esta nación
le llamarían
Cacique Ojo de Perla.

Si en vez de llorar
te murieses un día de estos,
como una puerca elegante con sus grasas
importadas del Norte,
nosotros,
que estamos cansados
de tanta estúpida confesión,
pondríamos a bailar las piedras
y los árboles darían frutos manufacturados.

Con tu vieja y putrefacta osamenta,
alimento de ratas,
llenaremos un solo lugar de esta tierra
y la llamaremos
la Cueva Maldita
y será proscrita de ver
y de acercarse a ella
por temor a despertar tus histéricas
ternuras.

Te llaman
José el de los sueños,
el de las vacas sagradas,
el dueño de las vacas más acá
y
Presidente de la «Sociedad Condal del Sueño».
Tus amigos te llaman
Barbitúrico.
¿Hasta cuándo duerme usted, señor Presidente?

Si adora la vaca,
¡duerme!
Si al becerro adora,
¡duerme!

y comienzo a reír
por la mañana y la noche
como un hijo de barrio.
Río en Vista Triste
y sus moradores,
todos dueños de grandes riquezas,
me aturden el entendimiento
y me rodean el cuello
de mil leyendas espantosas,
y me toman de la mano
para indicarme el camino
que habremos de seguir
después de la batalla,
en la cual
Yo, Poeta-Hostias,
de veinticinco años de edad
y abogado sin ejercicio,
andaré en mi caballo rojo,
temido y elegante.
Mi caballo de nombre secreto
para tenerle libre de apremio o
detención,
pues
en esta ciudad,
que yo beso con mis labios
de hermano de una sola mujer,
todo hay que tenerlo
al cuidado de los peores peligros
y acechanzas
de un reino de hombres y mujeres
que nada respetan
y todo destruyen
al primer golpe de vista.

Con mi caballo
yo andaré pisoteando calaveras
en mi ciudad
rodeada por murallas blancas
muy bien custodiadas
y con su sello de sangre
que haremos desaparecer.

En Vista Triste
me conocen a mí
y a mis tres hermanos
de padre y madre
con un vistoso porvenir.
Nos juntamos todos alrededor
de la choza más pobre.
Soy pintor informalista

y poeta que sale en la prensa
cuando las máquinas duermen.
Ando en mi ciudad,
en mi cárcel ando yo,
joven padre prófugo
en huida constante,
no temiendo
al viento
ni al cielo
ni hurgando sus casas desoladas,
pero sí ando o marcho
preguntando
en dónde está
el animal del sueño
que engendra tradiciones
y crímenes
sin temor
a las bellas estaciones del año,
porque quiero conocerlo
de frente
yo
con mis huestes
y ella
con sus yanquis
atormentados por un insaciable
amor
por esta tierra
o por esta ciudad,
enamorado
y armadores del Rey del Sueño,
venido
de New York
con partida de nacimiento
en Cincinnati o en Ohio,
que se pronuncia Ojayo,

o
lo que es lo mismo,
un monarca de cara de piedra
y manos de costurera trágica
como una puta vieja,
débil
histérica,
de piernas hermosísimas,
como el carro de guerra
que mató a
Abraham,
gran cabrón
y aliado occidental,
dueño de medio país
como las putas de Calígula
en tiempo del Rey de New York,
buscando amuletos
y pócimas
que regalar
a todos mis hermanos,
hijos de negros y de zambos
como Yo,
Poeta-Hostias,
aguardientoso
y madrugador,
pero que piensa
de un solo carajazo
derribar
a la vieja alimaña
de su trono,
con una ballena en mi pecho,
ella pariendo sus hijos
y alimentándolos yo
del hambre que tengo,
pienso,
creo que debo
batallar
por conocer verdades
que parecen ocultas.

Yo, que pinto con tierra,
esputos, cal y abestina
cuando hay los bolívares,
sé también trabajar
con la pluma del océano
más peligroso.

No ando con empleados
de la adulación
y del desastre,

me encargo de ayudar
a los que me da la gana,
por intereses que manda
mi única doctrina,
mi única ley.

No le soporto la injuria
a ningún infamado
epílogo de personajes
oficiales,
como el sistema métrico decimal,
que de nada sirve
cuando todo se importa
y nada se produce,
y ésta es mi gran ley económica,
todo mi conocimiento de gran
ignorante,
pues sólo sé que vendrán
días mejores
en los cuales
tendré
el saber
que asusta y hace llorar
a más de un perro emboscado
que tiene
esta cárcel,
este país.

Yo,
nacido en 1936,
pues tengo
veinticinco años,
pregunto
sin respaldo de Constitución
alguna:

¿en dónde está la mosca
que tanto hace
dormir
a El Presidente?

¡hombre equivocado!

Yo, Poeta-Hostias,
de pocos billetes en el bolsillo,
de mucho corazón,
creo no equivocarme
y
pregunto:
¿Duerme usted?
¡Viejo señor!
¡Viejo electo!
¡Viejo magnificente Pontífice!
¿Duerme usted?
¡Joven financista!
¡Banquero genial!
¿duerme?

Cansado de escribir necedades
durante once años,
buscando
no sé qué hermosas combinaciones
de frases y palabras,
ahora sólo quiero
tener una respuesta
a mis preguntas,
en el término de la distancia,
del Gran Imbécil
o de sus Hijos Putativos
o Putos.

Yo, descendiente de Achab
y ciudadano
que ama su ciudad,
puedo preguntar,
tengo el derecho
por la Constitución
de mis actos y de mi fe
de hombres de mar,
tengo el derecho,
digo,
de preguntar
en dónde está el monstruo
que ocasiona
tanto dolor,
tanta humillación,
porque tengo el mandato
escrito en piedra
de
acabar con él
o de refugiarme a
buscarle la solución
más inmediata
y duradera.

Yo, Poeta-Hostias,
amo a mi ciudad.
Vivo con una sola fe
y con un solo propósito de conocimiento
quizás
de mala fe
o de ignorancia
como pueda protestar
mucha mierda emboscada.
Quiero saber
¿por qué usted,
vieja osamenta,
sólo puede dormir?

Techo de la Ballena,
atendiendo la visita del
Astronauta,
de domicilio conocido
también,
amigo de Vista Triste
y un gran señor
amigo y poeta.

Yo, Viejo Achab, llamado
Hostias,
de
veinte y tantos años
de edad,
Protesto
con mi voz,
Protesto
con esta pluma
que me dieron
para que la respetara
e hiciese respetar.

Estoy libre de riquezas
y de libertad,
pero tengo una ballena en mi pecho
y un código
que respeto y defiendo
de los Reyes y de las Reinas,

Archiduques o Condes,
bailadores y comedores
de una misma mesa.
«Si en ves de hablar tanto
bailaran
la chanza de la muerte,
viviríamos felices».
No obstante,
lograremos derribar al enemigo
con sus Embajadores
y sus dientes perfectos
y sus achaques
y sus viejas prostitutas

débiles,
viudas de un cataclismo
que lograremos ver.

Yo, Poeta-Hostias,
pregunto:
¿Duerme usted, señor?

Hey you,
¿nos brindas un café?
